Hi Everyone,
As the Year 11 mocks are due to start next week, we would still recommend that Year 11s revise for the English Language papers using the BBC Bitesize website. All the details are in last week’s post.
It would be good practise for Year 10 students to look at some of the revision resources on BBC Bitesize also.
Just an operational note for a change happening to this website over the next couple of weeks. We will be changing the name of this blog to Batchwood KS4 English to match up with our new KS3 blog that we will be launching very soon. Students will be given instructions with the new website address when the change occurs. Our Twitter account will remain @Batchwood_Eng and we will post the new website address to that also when the change occurs.
Thank You!
Mrs. McCabe
The Year 11s will be beginning their mock exams on the week beginning 9th December 2019. This term the Year 11s will be sitting both English Language papers. For homework over the next couple of weeks, Year 11s should focus on revising for these exams.
A few weeks ago I posted a specimen paper for one of the English Language papers which students could look at.
The BBC Bitesize website also has useful revision resources for the English Language GCSE which students could work through here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/examspecs/zcbchv4
We are studying the AQA specification for both English Language and Literature for your reference.
Whilst Year 10s won’t be taking their mock exams until next year, students could still look at some of these revsion resources or the Romeo and Juliet revision resources that I posted earlier today.
Good Luck!
Mrs. McCabe
Key stage 4 groups have now finished, or are finishing their study of Romeo and Juliet.
To revise this unit, BBC Bitesize has a useful website with revision resources, videos and quizzes which can be found here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zykncwx
Students can work their way through the learner guides to consolidate their learning on this topic.
Good Luck!

Hi Everyone,
Please find below this week’s homework tasks. Task B is less challenging than Task A, for those struggling with A.
As I mentioned last week, the department email appears not to be working. If you speak with your English teacher they will give you their individual email address and you can email them directly.
I hope you have a good week!
Mrs. McCabe
Hello Everyone,
My apologies that i’m posting this week’s tasks a couple of days late, here they are:
Task B is less challenging for those who find Task A tricky.
There is still time to complete the practise exam paper set before half term. You will find the paper posted on our 22nd October post.
We have also received some feedback that the English Department email may not be working correctly. Please ask your English teacher for their individual email address so that you can email them directly.
As always, we recommend our GCSE students complete some wider reading where possible; sources from the exam board have advised that the articles they include in the exam paper are often sourced from Guardian Opinion.
Their articles are free to read online here:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/commentisfree
It maybe helpful to get into the practise of reading some of these articles regularly to get used to the style of writing.
You should also try to think about:
What is the writer trying to say?
How are they trying to persuade me?
Can I identify any techniques the writer uses to try and persuade?
Good Luck!
Mrs. McCabe
Hi Everyone,
This week I have posted two levels of homework task, with Task A being the more challenging version.
As it is half term next week, I am also including a specimen exam paper below for English Language.
Students can have a look at the paper and attempt any questions they wish. We will mark and give feedback for any questions they attempt.
Additionally, as I talked about in a previous blog post, wider reading is also a helpful activity in preparation for the English GCSE. Sources from the exam board have advised that the articles they include in the exam paper are often sourced from Guardian Opinion.
Their articles are free to read online here:
